Søborg Chair

Scandinavian design leverages efficient manufacturing techniques to make beautiful pieces commercially viable. In that spirit, this model is created using a single wood-grain texture that is manipulated in three ways to represent different fabrication treatments. Details are below.
The back and seat of the chair are made of plywood, indicated by the straight grain along the plane and the stacked texture of the cut edge. The stacked texture is created by rotating and stretching the grain until it mimics the thin sheets that comprise plywood. Furthermore, the gentle curvature of these elements are within the physical limits of bent plywood. The frame is constructed of flat pieces whose grain always runs lengthwise and doesn’t change direction around edges; this is milled solid wood. A slight shadow at the connection points shows that the legs and struts are separate pieces connected with internal pegs. My manufacturing knowledge helps me determine what details are needed to achieve photorealism without burdening the model with multiple textures.
This project was completed following a tutorial to recreate the Søborg Chair by Fredericia. I modeled, textured, lit, styled, and animated all elements of the scene. The scene was modeled in Blender and compiled in Adobe Premiere.
